type='text'>WXYC 10.10.10 10am-1pm Orange County Special: Kentucky Special

A special survey of traditional music of Kentucky, with guest, folklorist (and KY native) Lora Smith, as well as call-in guest, Eastern Kentucky musician Brett Ratliff.

Hear all of your favorite traditional Kentucky artists like Roscoe, Loretta, and D-wight, and also learn about some new ones, like Molly O'Day, who beat Earl Scruggs in a London, KY banjo contest (though he denies it), and Alfred Karnes, who made recording history by being the first person to be recorded by Ralph Peer at the Bristol Sessions. WOW!

You will also hear musical representations of the three reasons why we think Kentucky is great: horses, bourbon, and wild women.

Playlist <a In the Folk Revival there was a lot of borrowing of formerly English-turned American folk songs by British bands, and that may be the case with the Waterson's version of "Heavenly Aeroplane". The song is a gospel hymn, dating back to at least 1920. It was sung in Holy Roller meetings in the 1930s in Missouri and Arkansas, which the 2nd version is from--a sort of sung sermon. Stay tuned next week as we continue in this line and explore the hymn 'Mary Don't You Weep' which borrows verses, melody lines, and similar fire and brimstone sentiments from 'Heavenly Airplane'
18) Heavenly Aeroplane- The Watersons, Sound, Sound Your Instruments Of Joy
19) The Heavenly Airplane- John Byrd & Washboard Walter, 1929-1943 Rare Country Blues
--
20) Child of the Universe- The Byrds, Dr. Byrds & Mr. Hyde
21) Innerspace- Apples In Stereo, Fun Trick Noisemaker
22) When The Stars Begin To Fall- Preston Smith, Hobart Smith, & Texas Gladden, Southern Journey Vol. 4: Brethren, We Meet Again
23) The Red Dust- The Dumb And Ugly Club, Mars, 1967
24) B2 Ciel de Cimes- Patrice Sciortino, Chronoradial
25) The Lovely Universe- Circulatory System, S/T
--
26) Darkness To Light- Judy Dyble, Spindle
27) Teenage Spaceship- (Smog), Knock Knock
28) Starship- Paul Kantner-Jefferson Starship, Blows Against The Empire
29) Longer Boats- Cat Stevens, Radio Sessions 1971-1973 "I'd like to sing a song...I think it's about...SPACESHIPS, this one..." 'Matty Groves'is an English murder(double homocide, sometimes suicide crime of passion!) ballad which dates back to at least the 17th century and was collected by Francis James Child. Alternate Name include 'Little Musgrave' and 'Little Musgrave & Lady Barnard', and the Lord/murderer in the ballad is called various names-- Donald, Arlen, Daniel, Arnold, or Barnard. 'Shady Grove' is an 18th century American folk song which took the melody and 'Grove' name from 'Matty Groves'.
21) Matty Groves- Fairport Convention, Liege & Lief
22) Shady Grove- Doc Watson
--
23) Love Is Always Real- The Gentle Soul, S/T
24) Remember The Day- Sibylle Baier, The Colour Green
25) Girl I Love You- Michael Hurley
26) Always Bathing In The Evening- Will Oldham, Western Music
27) I Want Her, She Wants Me- The Zombies
28) I'm The Man That Loves You- Wilco
29) The Madness of Love
--
30) Oh Yoko- John Lennon, Imagine (one of my most favorite love songs of all time)

1.31.08 Show

1) De l'Autre Côté De La Foret- Tangerine
--
2) Curling Pond Woods- Greg Davis, Curling Pond Woods
3) The Diver Boy (Edwin In The Lowlands)- Ollie Gilbert, Southern Journey Vol. 1: Voices From the American South
4) Waves & Caves- Comus, To Keep From Crying
5) Nou Saute Palissade- Sega Revanne Mauricien & Sega Tambour, Musique from Ile Maurice
6) Golf Girl-Caravan, The Land of Grey & Pink
--
7) Jeffrey Goes To Leicester Square- Jethro Tull, Stand Up
8) Ode To Billy Joe- Boby Gentry, Ode To Billy Joe
9) Requiem Pour Un Con- Serge Gainsbourg, Les Années Psychédéliques
10) God If I Saw Her Now- Anthony Phillips, The Geese & The Ghost
11) I'll Be Rested (When The Roll Is Called)- Blind Roosevelt Graves & His Brother, American Primitive, Pre-War Gospel 1926-1936
--
12) Indian War Whoop- Holy Modal Rounders, Indian War Whoop
13) Never Going Back Again- Fleetwood Mac, Rumors
14) Chitima Nditakure- The Green Arrows, 4-Track Recording Sessions
15) You're Lookin' At Country- Loretta Lynn, S/T
--
Derivations, 2nd Installment: In this segment we compare and explore derivatives, descendents, and variations. In Installment 2 we listened to Bob Dylan's Dream, written by Bob Dylan in 1961, and the song he modeled it after, Lord Franklin. Also known as Lady Franklin's Lament, the song was written in 1845 about the Arctic Exploration of the British Naval officer Sir John Franklin, who disappeared while attempting to map the Northwest Passage. Bob Dylan's song is about his time spent on MacDougal St. in Greenwich Village in 1961 with the man who was to become Wavy Gravy.
16) Lord Franklin- Pentangle, Cruel Sister
17) Bob Dylan's Dream- Bob Dylan, The Freewhelin' Bob Dylan
--
18) Laminated Cat- Loose Fur, S/T
19) Lindsay- Archie Fisher, Will Ye Gang, Love
20) Postcards From Italy- Beirut, Gulag Orkestar
21) Let's Eat Food- Louis Munroe, S/T
--
22) Don't You Feel Fine- Perth County Conspiracy (Does Not Exist), S/T
23) Old Brown Shoe- The Beatles, Past Masters/B Side of The Ballad of John and Yoko
24) Here Comes One, Lavender Diamond, Imagine Our Love
25) You Keep Going Your Way- The Johnstons, Give A Damn/Bitter Green
26) Old Lady And The Devil- Bill and Belle Reed, The Anthology of American Folk Music
--
27) Sous Le Soleil Exactement- Serge Gainsbourg, Les Années Psychédéliques
28) Hori Horo- Shirley Collins & Davey Graham, Folk Roots, New Routes

I will be out-of-town next week, but my friend Julia will be filling in for me with a special new concept album treat!

Let's eat food...

1.24.08 Show

1) Track 16- Gal Costa, Mercury #1 & #2
2) Let’s Start- Fela Kuti, Fela Kuti Live with Ginger Baker 1971
3) Feeling Good- Nina Simone
4) Old Joe Clark- Wade Ward, Southern Journey, Vol. 2: Ballads & Breakdowns
5) The Narrator- Apples In Stereo, Fun Trick Noisemaker
6) She’s Just Like Me/Taking Time- Apples In Stereo, Fun Trick Noisemaker
--
7) Oh, Greedy Life- Marconi Notaro, No Sub Reino Dos Metazoários
8) Montmartre (Django’s Jump)- Django Reinhardt, All Star Sessions
9) Fly Around My Blue-Eyed Girl- Hobart Smith, Southern Journey, Vol. 2: Ballads & Breakdowns
10) January’s Snows- Woods Band, Woods Band
11) Same Old Man- Karen Dalton, In My Own Time
--
12) A Scarce O’ Tatties/Lyndhurst- Silly Wizard, So Many Partings
13) Sponge- Magna Carta, Songs From Wasties Orchard
14) Two Good Men- Woody Guthrie, Smithsonian Folkways: American Roots Collection, Dustbowl Ballads
--
New segment of the program where we compare two versions of the same song, an american folk song and its British predecessor, etc. or songs that are related in some way:(any ideas for this segment's title?)
15) The Coo Coo Bird- Clarence “Tom” Ashley, Anthology of American Folk Music
For more information on this song--its roots, context, and heritage, see the excellent essay "The Old, Weird America" by Greil Marcus, in "A Booklet of Essays, Appreciations, and Annotations Pertaining to the Anthology of American Folk Music Edited by Harry Smith"
16) The Cukoo- Anne Briggs, A Collection
17) The Cukoo’s Nest- Dave Swarbrick, Rags, Reels & Airs
18) Cukoo- The Monks, Black Monk Time
--
19) Jewel- T.
